With the start of a new school year approaching fast, now is the time to schedule a visit to our office. If your child has a cavity, then it’s much better to get a tooth filling now than to risk a tooth infection later.
This might seem like a small thing, but it can affect your kids’ performance in the classroom. We’ll discuss that more in a moment. For now, just know that our team at Prosthetic Dentistry of Tumwater wants your family to have the healthiest smiles that you can.

Stay Healthy
According to the American Dental Association, US students miss 51 million hours of instruction every year as a direct result of oral health problems.
National health officials report that by age 11, more than 40 percent of children will have at least one cavity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that 1 in 5 kids between the ages of 5 and 11 have untreated tooth decay. Among children 12 to 19 years, 13 percent have an untreated cavity.
It’s true that cavities are a common problem. More than 90 percent of people will have one during their lives, after all. Fixing a cavity is something that is a pretty routine procedure. Unfortunately, many people will ignore decay until it turns into a toothache.
And a recent survey of children 6 to 12 revealed that 1 in 7 reported having a toothache in the previous six months. A separate study found that teens who had toothaches were four times more likely to have low grades compared to their peers.
We can understand why this could cause problems. If a teacher is teaching, but a student is distracted by a toothache, they may not be able to focus on the day’s lesson. If a student can’t eat breakfast or lunch (because it hurts to bite and chew), they may not have the energy to finish daily tasks.
Stay In School
Chronic oral health problems can lead to many missed days of school. As we pointed, it also can affect how focused students can be during the day.
We can’t promise that your child will be the valedictorian by taking care of their teeth. At the same time, we do know that your child has a better chance to succeed when they aren’t worried about their oral health.
Tooth fillings can be a great solution for tooth decay, but some problems are bigger than that. It’s why we offer a wide range of restorative services at our office. For large cavities, broken teeth, and cracked teeth, a dental crown can restore your child’s healthy smile.
Act Now
We know you don’t want your kids to need a tooth filling, but taking care of a cavity today is much easier than dealing with a tooth infection weeks or months from now. To get your kids ready for the first day of school, plan a visit with our team at Prosthetic Dentistry of Tumwater.
