To Our Patients,

We understand and deeply respect that you may be concerned about coronavirus in public places, even at our state-of-the-art sterilized office.

Our first priority is always the health and well-being of our patients. And that is a priority we take extremely seriously, even with the current disruptions we’re all experiencing.

It has been a very difficult decision, but we have decided that it is in the best interest of our community, our team, and our patients that we not see patients for the time being.

If you do have a scheduled appointment, we will be reaching out to you directly to get you rescheduled to a future date.

This is just one more way that we can show our high level of care for you … and for everyone in our community. We very much look forward to seeing you, your family, and your friends very soon.

As always, if you have any questions, please call our office at 360-229-5861.

Sincerely,
Dr. Rick Jude

This office has always felt very welcoming. When I first moved to Olympia, I was looking for a dentist. Actually, I wasn't. I was told by my doctor in Los Angeles that I would never find a prosthodontist in the Pacific Northwest, and I needed a prosthodontist. So, about two months after I moved here, I broke a tooth, and I freaked out because I thought, “I'm never going to find anybody.” I looked online. I found Dr. Jude and made an appointment really quickly and came on in. It's welcoming. There's a fish tank and there's a fireplace and there's coffee and always a smile when you come in from the receptionist. It's just an easy place.

The first time that I was here, I had read about Dr. Jude online, so I saw his profile. I was waiting for him to come into the room after getting my bib and waiting, getting ready. He walked in and I hadn't seen him yet, but I heard a "Hello, Miss Tessa." It was just so sweet. I thought, "Oh, yeah, he's a Kentucky boy.” We hit it off immediately. We both love dogs, and so we started talking about dogs. And while he's working on you, he'll tell you what's he doing, if you want, or he'll just leave you alone. You can sleep behind your goggles. He's a perfectionist, so he won't let you leave without having a perfectly matched tooth. He doesn't like pain, so he will make sure you are not feeling anything bad. He gives the best, the best Novocain injections. Have to say, don't even feel it when it's happening. He's a lovely man.

The first time that I came in, I had a broken tooth. And I ... First of all, I got an appointment almost immediately. Because I was new here, I didn't know anybody. I didn't know anybody to refer me to a dentist, nothing. So I called the office, I said, "I'm new, I'm brand new to town. I don't know what I'm doing." And they ... and I broke a tooth, and I'm kind of, I don't know what to do. They got me in right away.

I came in, met Dr. Jude with his, you know, “Hello, Ms. Tessa” style. It was ... We prepped for a crown for that tooth, and then I had an appointment to come back to have the crown delivered, and he wasn't here. And the receptionist said, "I'm so sorry. He had an emergency, it was a personal emergency." And his dog was sick, and I went, "Well, okay." You know, I'd cancel anything if my dog was sick and I had to take it to the vet. But as I was leaving, she said, "Oh, wait a minute. The doctor got these for you." And it was a Mason jar with daffodils. So just as an apology for a missed visit. It just sort of speaks to the sweetness and generosity of Dr. Jude.

And the personal – he's just, he's very personal. He's very personable, and you feel very comfortable with him in here.

I've had just kind of all of the normal procedures done here, you know, fillings – I'm a little older, so there's a lot of older fillings that have fallen out or crowns that the margin has receded. My gums have receded a little bit in certain places, so he's taken care of, like, maintenance. But also, I've had, actually, since I've been here, two broken teeth. And he took care of both of those, and referred me to a gum doctor who had to do a little work there, and she was wonderful.

He's got a great network of people that he works with. The lab guy who does the crowns is like brilliant with the color matching. And Dr. Jude, again, won't let you leave without it being perfectly matched. And I've had some front teeth done by him, and he just did a beautiful job. So he's got a great network. The staff, everybody just works together really well.

I've had a lot of crowns done before. Fortunately, at this office, it seems a lot easier. He's quick but thorough, so you're not sitting in the chair for hours, like waiting. If the crown is not the right color, he'll send it back to the lab. And yeah, it's again, the network of the lab, his other doctors that he refers you to, and the staff here is just really, I mean, really competent, really easy to get through.

So from the first appointment to the last, usually it's only two appointments. You have the crown prep and then the crown delivery. But if it takes an extra appointment, he'll do that. And I've never left unhappy with the results. I mean, he's matched teeth that the guys in Los Angeles couldn't match. I mean, I'm so amazed to have moved to Olympia, after being told by my doctor of like 25 years in Los Angeles that I would not be able to find a prosthodontist that was as good as he was, anyway. And here I find Dr. Jude, who has taught this at the University at Washington.

So I found the right place and the right doctor, that's for sure.

Some of the procedures that I've had in the office: I've had crowns, I've had fillings. Of course, I've been keeping up with my hygiene work, so then having my teeth cleaned and having all the appropriate things done. I've never had a problem in between the crowns and everything. It's just been an ongoing, easy-going procedure.

Having a crown done in the office is a very long procedure because they have to prep the tooth, they have to take impressions, which is all fine. The doctor explains everything as they're doing it. His assistant usually does the impressions. They put a temporary on. Never had a temporary even come off, so that's a plus. It takes a couple of appointments to get it done, and the tooth, the color was perfect, the fit was perfect. Never had one come off. I think I have four of them in my mouth.

It was very complete and professionally done. Everybody was sweet and kind: "Do you need a break? Do you want us to stop?" Like I said before, I'm always so comfortable that my thing is, "No, go ahead. I'm fine. I'm relaxed."

The outcome is absolutely fantastic because I'm 71-and-a-half years old, and a lot of my friends who are my age, their teeth are starting to yellow or whatever, but because they've been on top of me, making sure that I'm in the office and my work is done, I've not had that problem. People always ask me, "How come your teeth are so white?" It's because I get good dental care. You can't tell the difference between my crowns or my real teeth because they're so perfectly matched.

I have dentistry in my background. My dad was a dentist, my mom was a denturist. I have a brother who's an orthodontist, and I was a chairside assistant for years before I was married.

I wasn't exactly sure – this was back in Michigan where my family is – I'm out here, this is different. And going to a doctor who is not my family member is a whole new situation to begin with. But when I came into this office, the greeting that you receive from the staff itself it very kind and generous, very helpful. And when I met the doctor and we started to talk, it was like he cared so much for my teeth, it was almost like my dad reincarnated. It was like yes, this is where I need to be. He's kind, he's gentle, very caring, cares about all of his patients, even the ones that you meet out in the office and you begin to talk. Everybody says the same thing.

I think a lot of people fear going to a dentist because they don't ... they hear stories about other people who have been hurt or have gone through pain. And Dr. Jude isn't like that. He really finds out what your fear is, and he deals with it. I've never had a problem because he is so good at what he does. And my biggest problem is that even when I've had a crown done and I've been here for like an hour and a half, it's trying to stay awake because I would just as soon go to sleep I'm so relaxed. And most people aren't relaxed in a dental office. Granted, I know I have dental background so I have nothing to fear, but I could understand people who would come in and feel the same way I do as they leave.

The level of professionalism and cleanliness I guess as a nurse – that's what I look for, is an office that's clean, and staff also that are friendly. The front desk is your first contact to anything, whether it's in school, the secretary, or whether it's the receptionist at an office, and they usually ... if it goes well in the front desk, usually that's a good sign everything's going well within the unit.

So, that's another reason I like coming here. Everybody was always friendly, helpful, and understanding.

Well, one thing is, you know, when you get to this point where you're losing teeth, there's a lot of self-esteem involved, and sometimes feelings, like I've been to a dentist where the hygienist for instance would scold you for not cleaning your teeth properly, and here it would be, “Oh, you've done a good job, but maybe you could try a little bit better here,” and showing me what to do.

Then, his main assistant actually went to my surgery with the oral surgeon, accompanied Dr. Jude to the end of the surgery to see what we would need right after, and it was also my first contact the day after surgery, at 9:00 in the morning I was in the office that they were fitting me for my temporary teeth, so that I never had to go out in public without teeth.

For me, I always had crummy-looking teeth. My mouth is small. My teeth were jammed in. One of the teeth was like this: it didn't lay flat, it curled over. And when I was able to get these teeth, I was like "Oh, wow I can't believe it." I was never able to put my teeth together, so after the teeth were ordered, he adjusted a few things also that helped with both my appearance and my function, so that was nice too.

I had already had four implants, single implants in my mouth, and I was still having a lot of trouble healing after each one, and financially each one was going to be ending up costing me at a one-at-a-time basis way more than just going for the whole set. It kind of culminated when I was hospitalized the summer after my fourth implant. The mouth is full of germs and stuff, and it travels elsewhere, and I ended up with a really bad infection in the hospital, so my oral health was affecting the rest of my health. Pretty much then I decided to have the consult with Dr. Jude, and he went over the different possibilities and stuff, and then I went back to my oral surgeon, who also felt that that was a good decision.

I didn't realize how happy I was until I looked at pictures of myself before and after, and I wasn't smiling in one of my pictures. I know that probably most people in my situation will say the same thing, but when I look back, I go, "Wow.' I also look at current pictures, and I break into a smile very easily.
